May the Force be with you…… post number 101

As most blog posts do, this is all stemmed from a conversation with a co-worker. Which ironically, reminded me of a movie.

Randal Graves: Which did you like better? “Jedi” or “The Empire Strikes Back”?
Dante Hicks: “Empire”.
Randal Graves: Blasphemy.
Dante Hicks: “Empire” had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader’s his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that’s what life is, a series of down endings. All “Jedi” had was a bunch of Muppets.

It wasn’t that exact question, but close.

“Hey, which trilogy did you like better?” Now in my office there is no need to clarify which set of three movies were being discussed. Both parties involved knew the other understood what was about to happen. I looked at him and said 4,5,6. (the original star wars trilogy for those who are confused.)

And with that came a discussion as to why. Not that he disagreed he was leading up to a better question. So after discussion as to what we found wrong with 1,2,3 he asked what he was really after.

“do you think that the kids today, will look down at the original star wars trilogy and think that it’s a terrible set of movies?”

Wow. Umm. Yeah. I wasn’t prepared for that question. I had never thought about that particular point. So where better to answer that question then right here.

Do I, Chachi says, think that the kids today will look down at the original star wars trilogy and think that it’s a terrible set of movies?”

Before I answer this, I just want to acknowledge the fact that this in itself is a great question. One of the best ever asked to me. I just hope I answer it with the same justice.

Movies go with their particular times, each generation has a set of movies that it remembers as being great, breathtaking, memorable, amazing. (insert more adjectives here.) These are in just about every generation. It happens. However this set of movies has spanned across several generations and continues too. With the release of the New set it brought back and gained new fans of the old set “renewing” if you will the hype and fame it once had and carried on within original fans.

Now do I think children today will like the older set more then the newer set.
I would love to be able to sit here and flat out tell you yes, and point out why, but unfortunately I cannot. In fact I cant even tell you no. What I can tell you is that the influences in a child’s life will determine which one they like more.
If they have Nerdy parents then the answer could be yes. If the kid has a friend with nerdy parents the answer could be yes or no. If the child has no nerdy influences at all, then the answer is most likely no.
This is why I can’t answer the question.

I don’t have the time and/or money to influence the next generation with my opinions.

What I can tell you is that there is a good chance that the number of nerds alive having children is great and allows the tradition to carry.

Chachi Says: Do or Do Not. There is no try.

  1. The force is strong with this one.

  2. It can go either way:

Option 1: The movies could be seen as timeless, much like Disney movies such as Snow White, Pinoccio, etc are seen as unforgettable film experiences that parents today still put in front of their kids 70 years later.

Option 2: It become the old, uncool, standard. Nirvana, once a rebellious anti-culture grunge band, is now on the “oldies” stations. And we hate emo, which may be the anti-establishment replacement. Today’s “Nirvana”. Much like we see REO Speedwagon as uncool in our day of rocking the flannel…
